Alchemy and You!

August 31, 2007

My profession, all the way back to my very first, wee-baby druid, has been alchemy. I think it’s one of the best professions in the game (mostly because it’s my favorite). I’ve always enjoyed the benefits of having an unlimited supply of pots at my disposal. Alas, those days are over as I no longer have herbalism… my alchemy uses are subjugated to pimping my Primal Might xmute in the trade chanel, and never having anyone take me up on it (I’d do it for free… I just want the extras on once-in-a-blue-moon occasion when I get them since I don’t have the time or energy to farm for mats my self or the cash to buy them) Anywhoo, I digress, my purpose for this post is to introduce you to some of the products of Alchemy that you might find usefull for instancing/raiding. As usual, we’ll start at the beginning.

Flasks vs. Elixirs

On this one, I think Blizzard did a good job of balancing them out. Flasks last for 2 hours, count as Battle AND Guardian elixirs (you may only have one of each active at any time) and last through death. They are also MUCH more mat intensive and therefore more expensive. Elixirs will (at the higher levels) last for 1 hour, will either be Battle OR Guardian and they die with you. They are cheaper and the mats usually easier to obtain. Flasks are usually more powerful than Elixirs as well.

(Disclaimer: the above statements are from my observation, there may be exceptions that I am unaware of; if so, please leave me a comment)

With that background, I think that Flasks should be used while you are learning an instance/raid (I’m speaking primarially of raids, I’m not sure I’d spend the money on flasks for regualr instances… maybe heroics tho, depends on how much disposable income you have). While you and your group are still in the learning process, you’re probably going to wipe more often and therefore go through more pots, and it will be more cost effective to use flasks. If you’ve got the instance/raid on “farm mode” (you know all the tricks and can beat it easily) then elixirs are probably more cost effective. There is one exception I can see. If your gear isn’t quite up to par with the raid you might need the extra oomph of the Flask no matter how well you know your way around.

With all that in mind, here’s some of my favorites:

Flasks – Flask recipes are usually discovered and if not are going to be rep rewards.

Battle Elixirs

Guardian Elixirs

Which ones do you use? The answer to that is very personal. Take a look at your gear. What is lacking? Do you need more healing? Elixir of Healing Power is for you. Are you (to quote the Ego) “a wet tissue?” Elixir of Major Fortitude or Flask of the Titans would serve you well. If you look at your stats and can’t come up with anything specific that’s lacking my sugestion would be Elixir of Healing Power and Dreanic Wisdom or Flask of Mighty Restoration (the Flask is what I used in Kara the other night, FYI)

The moral of the story is:

  • Take a look at your gear and use your available resources to fill in the gaps when you need it.

Tune in next week for:

  • Some thoughts on the Shadowfiend, your creepy, crawly, best friend!

We’re BAMF!!

August 29, 2007

First Kara run… Attumen down, one shot! Moroes down, 3rd try!  I may be going overboard with the BAMF, but I think we did great for our first time in any raid.  There were 2 DPS that took 50% of the damage meter between the 2 of them so I think we need to get everyone geared a little better before we go too much farther.

For anyone who’s curious here’s our group makeup: 2 Prot Warriors as tanks, 2 Holy Priests and Holy Pally as healers, Affliction and a Destruction Warlock, BM Hunter, Fire Mage, and Feral Druid as DPS. I think things went really well. For Attumen we had the other priest main heal through the first 2 phases and I picked up when he went OOM mid way through Phase 2. The Pally healed the off tank. We cut through him like a hot knife through butter! Moroes was a little harder. The shackle constantly breaking was our downfall the first 2 times. What we decided to do was kill one of the shackles instead of keeping them both shackled the entire fight. That guy is a pain but we downed him! I’m off to bed with a grin on my face!

Heroic Gear

August 29, 2007

Inspired but this post at World of Matticus, I’ve decided to put some gear from Heroic instances that has caught my eye. Since I’m using the tailoring pieces (Whitemend and Primal Mooncloth), I didn’t look at those gear slots.

edit: added Necklace of Eternal Hope.

Neck –

  • Necklace of Resplendant Hope: 9 MP5 and 53 Heal; drops from Epoch Hunter in Heroic Old Hills
  • Necklace of Eternal Hope: 22 Sta, 21 Int, 48 Heal, 4 MP5; Badge of Justice Reward

Feet –

  • Boots of the Pious: 16 Int, 24 Sta, 23 Spi, 62 Heal; drops from the Calculator in Heroic Mechanar.

Legs – I know I said I wouldn’t be looking at this slot, but these caught my eye and if it comes along before I get my Whitemend Pants made, I’ll be snatching them up.

  • Pontifex Kilt: 29 Int, 25 Sta, 27 Spi and 66 Heal; drops from Heroic Steamvaults

Finger –

Weapons –

  • Shockwave Truncheon (MH Mace): 24 Sta, 6 MP5, 16 Spell crit, 317 Heal; Drops from Murmur in Heroic Shadow Labs
  • Tears of Heaven (Off Hand): 5 MP5, 70 Heal; Badge of Justice Reward

These are just some of the things that caught my eye on a first glance at the loot tables.  Can’t wait to get into some of these!

Ego gave me something to think about in her post this morning.  She stated what her standards were in chosing a blog to add to her blogroll.  I must admit that I don’t feel it necessary to be quite so choosy (but hey, to each his own) but she did make a good point that the wall of links is a bit daunting.  Therefore I will be making another page (you’ll be able to access it from the Pages section on the left) for this blog that will include all the links that are currently in my blogroll and probably include a snipet about the blog and why I like it; and I’ll be keeping my links on the front page down to my favorites.  Please don’t be offended if you get moved to the other page, I simply want to make things a little cleaner.  BTW, thanks for the link Ego!

Ok, I’m getting ready for a respec for raiding. As I mentioned earlier I wanted to see who the other priest is going to be so I can take CoH instead of Imp DS if I could… the most likely candidate has DS but did not take the Improvement (took the other 2 points in Empowered Healing) kinda strange if you ask me… the buff is kind of worthless for other casters unless you take the improvement, but then again, he dosen’t look like he has a “raiding” spec so he may only intend the buff to benefit himself; his deal, not mine. So anywhoo, I will be taking Imp DS, and therefore 23/38/0. I’m going to do this Kirk style with the “stream of consciousness” thing. I enjoyed reading his articles and hopefully this will give some insight into why I make the decisions I do. I’m also going to assume that you have a talent calculator open so I don’t have to explain what every talent is.

I’m Skeered!

August 28, 2007

My GM finally got up off his butt and scheduled a Kara run (Loth if you find this, love you chief!)  Most of us aren’t ready for the whole thing but I think we’ll be ok for the first couple of bosses.  We’re just going to try Attumen for our first night (which I think will be Wed, so no Heroic UB that night in all likleyhood)  Maybe we won’t get past the first couple of trash pulls… maybe we’ll blow Attumen away with our BAMF skills (yea… riiiiiight… whatever you say Gala…)  but we’ll fianlly be in the door!

On that note, I’ll probably be respeccing tonight or tomorow so expect a post on that.  I just wish I knew for sure who the other priest was going to be… if he’s got Imp DS then I’m going for CoH, if not then I’m going to go for DS… must ponder…

Heroic Mechanar – Again

August 27, 2007

Our next try at Heroic Mech was last night.  Unfortunatley the tactic of kiting Septhera down the hall dosen’t work any more, you get a little ways down there and she resets 😦  Bummer, that was such a good idea.  I don’t understand why she is so hard… her loot table is kinda crappy for being so hard.  We tried 2 times and wiped both times (for those of you who have never run it in heroic, there’s 3 elementals… as if 2 weren’t hard enough)   No Suneater for the tank but I did get a tailoring pattern: Arcanoweave Robe.  If I ever decide to make an arcane resist set I’m well on my way.  There was some other stuff that droped, but I’m having trouble remembering now.

On another note, I spent a little time looking at the heroic loot tables (I think I’ve got all my keys now, yay!)  and there’s some spiffy stuff!  Look for a future post with some of my favorites.

Edit:  I almost forgot to add that I finally got my Primal Mooncloth Robe made!  With it equiped and socketed, I now have over 1200 +heal!  I’m very excited!
